SUMMARY:Art and Psychoanalysis:  Bringing Meaning to the Ineffable--Inside
 the Museum Infinity Goes Up on Trial
DESCRIPTION:This paper is a short biographical study that focuses on some
 aspects of J.M.W. Turner's life and work.  As a Romantic period painter\,
 much of his work focused on the nature of the Sublime as represented in
 aesthetic evocations of awe\, infinity\, and the ineffable. The paper links
 these themes with Bion's concept of "O" that identifies similar experiences
 which are too powerful and lacking in contours and boundaries to be known.
 Turner's later work appears to be aimed at plumbing these mysteries through
 experiments with colors in an attempt to grasp the essence of light. 
 Turner's explorations are viewed in this paper through his personal history
 and his painting.\n\nEducational Objectives\nAt the conclusion of this
 program the participants will be able to:\n1) Describe how in the Romantic
 period artists focused on the theme of the Sublime and to explain what
 qualities this term referred to at that time\n2) Discuss and compare Bion's
 concept of "O" with the experience evoked in Turner's representations of
 the Sublime\n3) Demonstrate the link between the analytic experience of the
 unknowable\, ineffable\, and aw inspiring through a review and analysis of
 Turner's paintings.
